Beautiful Blues – stories of experiences and contributions of seniors from Caribbean and other migrants to Southwark life — launched through Walworth Golden Oldies.
Beautiful Blues launched Following a year-long Arts Council-funded project delivering writing workshops to Caribbean and migrant elders in Southwark, Jacqueline Crooks, Camberwell-based writer and social researcher, has produced an anthology of contributions entitled Beautiful Blues, now available from Walworth Golden Oldies following its launch in March at the new Camberwell Library in the presence of mayors of Southwark old and new, the authors, and several well-wishers from across Britain. Meet the authors Golden Oldies members Abigail, Grace, Pat and Bertrand are all featured, as are stories from other writers and artists who have supported the project over the year, including Richard Skinner, a resident of Camberwell and author of three novels, as well as three books of non-fiction and two of poetry. He is also Director of the Fiction Programme at the well-known Faber Academy, where he has taught several best-selling authors, such as S J Watson (Before She Goes to Sleep). Richard also runs Vanguard Readings and Vanguard Editions, a community group providing a monthly literary salon in Southwark and a small publishing company publishing the anthology. Copies, £6 each, are available from Golden Oldies. To order a copy call 020 7252 7444 or email us at [email protected] |

Walworth Golden Oldies and Walworth Methodist Church celebrate opening of refurbished gardens at Easter.
Team work delivers A team of over 30 employees from Network Rail and partners Osborne have volunteered their time and energies to undertake some brilliant improvement works to the church gardens and office space for Walworth Golden Oldies and other users of the church. This project was undertaken in March following on from earlier visits to the church from contacts Sherena Kranat of Network Rail and Justas Janulevicius of Osbourne’s, and some intensive work from their colleagues, to complete this challenging project - in just two days! Our office was repainted and a new sink installed, broken paving slabs and steps fixed, doors refurbished, a new handrail installed, as well as benches and shed replaced, plus umbrellas and raised beds for fruits and berries created. Promoting local community inclusion The refurbished gardens are now open and completely accessible for older people of Walworth Golden Oldies charity, and the many other older people and youth who attend the diverse projects and activities run by the range of charities located at Walworth Methodist Church. The refurbished gardens will increase community engagement for us at Golden Oldies as we will promote this new resource to everyone in the community to enable us to develop more inter-generational contacts locally. All volunteer gardeners welcomed!!! Join in the celebrations Please come along and join us to help celebrate and enjoy all our communities can achieve by working together. “It has been a pleasure working with the dedicated and caring team at Network Rail and Osborne. They have consulted with our members so that the gardens will be the vision of the community.” Russell Profitt MBE, Chair of Walworth Golden Oldies |
