“Empowering and supporting older people to live healthy and productive lives in later
years, participating in their communities.”
The Golden Oldies community care project was founded by the late Reverend Lillian Frances in 1991 with
the initiative to bring people together and create an environment for older people to live healthy and
social lives. She was passionate about keeping older people mentally and physically active, and sustain
civic participation with the community. However she found that there was a lack of information and
resources available and thus ignited the Golden Oldies. After her retirement Reverend Francis reached
out to social organisations for older people, especially those of Afro-Caribbean descent.
Today we continue to support the vision of Reverend Frances and aim to keep older people
physically active, independent and fully participating in their community.
Members
Our members are people aged 60+ from the Afro-Caribbean community in Southwark, in particular
Camberwell, Peckham, Rotherhithe, South Bermondsey and East Walworth.
We currently have 45 older Afro-Caribbean members and through our programmes of
support we are aiming to extend our reach to a total of 75 older people. Our membership database is
supplemented through making contact with other BAME led senior groups and churches. This enables us
to establish information on numbers of the elderly isolated BAME in the area. This includes those from
‘emerging’ migrant communities locally, any organisations involved, those interested in becoming engaged in
activities, or becoming involved as volunteers, to help us develop interesting and informative
programmes of interest.
Our members’ needs
Over the years Golden Oldies have been aware of relevant research on elderly needs. As a result of this
research we have made great efforts to help our members by assisting them to address the many
health and well-being challenges they may face through:
1. becoming actively engaged in physically and mentally stimulating activities
2. mixing with the range of generations and communities in which they live
3. are able to play their part and can share their rich heritage with others
